The African Side-necked Turtle, also known as the African mud turtle or African helmeted turtle, is a species of freshwater turtle found in sub-Saharan Africa.
These turtles have a distinctive "side-necked" appearance, with their heads and necks tucked to the side of their bodies when they retract into their shells. They have a flattened, oval-shaped shell that can range in color from dark brown to black, with a yellow or cream-colored underside.
African side-necked turtles are semi-aquatic and can be found in a variety of freshwater habitats, including rivers, streams, and ponds. They are omnivores and feed on a range of foods, including insects, snails, fish, and aquatic plants.
In captivity, African side-necked turtles can make interesting and rewarding pets, but they require a specialized set-up and diet. They need a large aquarium or pond with a basking area, UVB lighting, and a water heater to maintain proper temperatures. They also require a varied diet that includes both animal and plant matter, and their enclosure must be kept clean to prevent health problems.
