Avicularia purpurea
Avicularia purpurea, also known as the Purple Pinktoe Tarantula, is a species of arboreal tarantula native to South America. They are a medium-sized tarantula, with adults growing up to around 5-6 inches in leg span.
Avicularia purpurea has a dark-colored carapace and a purple-blue hue on their legs and abdomen, with pink hairs on their legs and a pinkish tinge on their abdomen. They are arboreal and can often be found living in the canopy of rainforests, where they create silk-lined burrows in tree hollows or crevices.
In the pet trade, Avicularia purpurea is a popular species due to their striking appearance and relatively docile temperament. However, they require specialized care and a suitable enclosure that mimics their natural environment. This includes a tall enclosure with plenty of vertical climbing surfaces, a substrate that retains moisture well, and a temperature and humidity range that supports their health.
Like other tarantulas, Avicularia purpurea are carnivorous and primarily feed on insects and other small invertebrates. They are also known to molt their exoskeletons periodically as they grow.
It is important to note that while Avicularia purpurea are not considered dangerous to humans, they can deliver a painful bite if they feel threatened or provoked. Therefore, it is important to handle them with caution and to avoid unnecessary handling or stress.
